What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic care is a science and philosophy that focuses on the relationship between the nervous system and the function of the body. Chiropractic treatment has existed in the US over 100 years, but manipulation has been discovered in ancient Chinese paintings that are thousands of years old.

Education:  Doctors of chiropractic have basically the same curriculum as Medical doctors with four years premedical and 4 years of graduate study. Chiropractic education totals about 8 years of school and a little more than 4800 hours.

The Science: Chiropractic treatment is based on the scientific fact that the nervous system controls the function of every cell, tissue, organ, and system in the body. The brain is protected by the skull and the spinal cord is covered by 24 moving vertebrae. When these bones lose their normal motion or position they can irritate the nervous system and disrupt the normal function of the tissues or organs. Chiropractic is the science of locating and correcting these areas with spinal malfunction.

The Philosophy:
The body has the ability to heal itself, but only when the nervous system is working properly.  So our main purpose is to reduce the interference that may blocked the patients own normal healing ability.

What type of care do you provide & Why?
Spinal manipulation also called chiropractic adjustment is the most common therapeutic procedure performed by doctors of chiropractic.  The purpose of manipulation is to restore joint mobility by manually applying a controlled force into joints that have become restricted in their movement.  Restricted movement as a result of a tissue injury can be caused by improper lifting, repetitive stresses and poor spinal posture for an extended period of time. Trauma is one of the major causes of spinal restriction. In either case, injured tissues undergo physical and chemical changes that can cause inflammation, pain, and diminished function for the sufferer. The symptoms can take hours, days, months, or even years to increase from discomfort to pain, numbness, or other dysfunction.
